Martial Arts and Empowerment

Kickstart your fitness in a welcoming environment with martial arts. Kickstart’s intensive martial arts and defence programmes are designed for those wanting to kickstart a regular exercise programme in a small-group environment and develop basic, practical martial arts or self-defence skills.

Traditionally in Australia, martial arts run in the evenings and frequently caters for a range of people in any given class, or the boot camp or group boxing classes don’t focus on precise technique,.  Although that suits many, perhaps you want to learn some self-defense applications and develop some precision in your technique, get fitter alongside others who are starting out too, or you simply find evenings or gym classes extra busy – try Kickstart’s intensive workshops or morning classes instead!

What you do in class:

Warm ups and dynamic movements

Pad and bag work

ABK Muay Thai – Practise attack and defence using the 8 attacking tools of the human body

Anderson Bushi Kai – Practice a range of basic attacks and defenses and learn fixed sequences of movement (kata)

ITF Taekwon-Do – Practice a range of basic attacks and defenses and learn fixed sequences of movement (patterns)

Punching for Fitness and precision – Practise a range of techniques, without kicks.

Women’s Empowerment  – mindset work, environmental defense awareness, attacks and defenses, physical fitness

No sparring – non-contact and semi-contact available upon request in private sessions.

The last two 8-week rounds of these classes at Kickstart involved about 30 classes to create new health and habits! Consider 3 classes a week for 5 weeks, followed by 5 times a week for the last 3 weeks! If you’re interested, get in touch or develop at your own personal pace with private  Kickstart lessons.

Please note: After your series of lessons, you’ll be eligible to grade for a recognised rank (gradings are held twice a year for a small fee), but there is no requirement to do so.

Today’s society exposes us to increased violence. It’s now more important than ever that people are empowered with skills in self-defence. It draws on the most practical skills gained from various martial arts and from the hand-to-hand combat system Krav Maga. Physical confidence, breath control and environmental defence awareness all contribute to the resilience needed in the 21st Century.

If you are an employee whose workers are exposed to potentially risky situations, perhaps during sun-down or in isolated spaces, give them more confidence, empower them to improve their safety with greater environmental awareness and self-defence knowledge, and improve risk-management of your workplace.

Miranda conducted her first self-defence workshops for children in 2001. Having experienced confrontation in her role as a security guard, testing in her Krav Maga blackbelt certification and, most significantly personally in travels overseas, she is more passionate than ever in sharing no-nonsense skills and expertise with young people and women. Drawing on her more recent education in mediation, Miranda includes breathing techniques and mindfulness exercises in her classes to help manage the part the mind plays in emotionally charged situations.

Look out for workshops on the events page, book a group, private or learn these skills within the ABK classes.

Ages 13+ to senior adults.

An understanding of hand-work from a range of styles provides the base for boxing at Kickstart. Depending on the group, it can be specific to Muay Thai, Bushi Kai, Tae-Kwon-Do, or specific to Punchfit.

Offering punches/elbows for beginners & adding kicks/knees for those ready/wishing for further variety.

Freestyle Martial Arts

Based on traditional Karate, experience in real street situations, backgrounds in security and more, O’Kaicho Malcolm Anderson (10th Degree) has spent his lifetime studying and refining the principles of martial arts. He has developed Anderson Bushi Kai, the instructors and systems for the modern day.  Anderson Bushi Kai, which translated means Society of Warriors, develops in its students, a firm foundation for discipline, skill, respect and loyalty.

Ideal for anyone age 13+ without injury, but at present it is especially suited to women and teenage girls. The series of small classes at Kickstart allow the community of participants to develop skills with the intensity that suits, breaking a sweat while breaking down mental and physical barriers. Opportunity, but no requirement, to grade.

Expanding times! Classes resume from (and including) Easter Monday.

Mondays 4:50pm and Thursdays 4:50pm. Book one or both. 45min class.

ABK Muay Thai can help those who want to get fit, all the way through to those who want to seriously train and fight in the ring. Many fighter have been developed through the tuition of Kru Malcolm Anderson. Current classes with Miranda act as an introduction to Muay Thai, exploring the basics and, unless requested, without sparring. The series of small classes at Kickstart allow the community of participants to develop fitness, discipline, skill and respect (for themselves and for others).

This is currently a combined offering with Punch for Fitness and Finesse:

Kick/box for Fitness and Finesse. First week of February. Fridays 5:30am (45min)

The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) is headed by Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa, son of the founder of Taekwon-Do in Korea. Thoroughbred Taekwon-Do is the founding school United ITF Taekwon-Do (Australia), headed by Chief Instructor Master Michael (8th Degree) who is the current national body’s president and technical director.

The main objectives of Thoroughbred are to “provide high quality instruction and opportunities for students, developing their skills and moral culture.” The Thoroughbred perspective on ITF is to “maintain the true value of Taekwon-Do as a self-defense, not merely a tournament sport. Students who study with discipline, application and dedication will be greater people with knowledge and skills, and more importantly the morality and sense of humanity, not merely the ability to kick and punch.”
